At the time, the BC Highway Patrol said a white Tesla operating as an Uber pulled over near the exit so the driver could attend to one of the four passengers.
A Chevrolet SUV then hit the Tesla from behind, killing a 20-year-old Maple Ridge woman on the spot and sending the three other passengers to the hospital, two in critical condition. The driver was also taken to hospital.
Approximately a week after the crash, a second woman, a 23-year-old from Maple Ridge, died.
In an update Friday, the BC Highway Patrol says that after more than a year of investigation, a Surrey man was charged with 15 criminal offences on June 9.
The charges include offences related to driving while impaired by drugs, including methamphetamine.
According to the BCHP, the accused is expected back in court on July 24, 2025.
